How to Juggle

And finally…both kids are back in school together again! It’s been a challenging few months of School Interrupted for many children around the world, but at the same time it’s provided us a much-needed opportunity to break from routine and try out fun random new things. Because who knows what the future holds! With all their classes going online, screen time and the sedentary nature of lockdown life became more of an issue. So, as a little antidote to the long periods of sitting in front of the computer, I suggested the kids could take frequent screen breaks and get moving by…learning how to juggle.

Juggling is like riding a bike – once you master it you won’t forget it, but you need to put in some consistent practice to get there. The short practices were a fun diversion, but frequently frustrating – especially for two girls who aren’t ball-sports players and didn’t have particularly well-honed hand-eye coordination to begin with! Nevertheless, the endless lockdown hours gave them time to keep at it – and acquire a little perseverance along the way.

After about three weeks of practicing for just a few minutes a day, Miss Chu finally managed to get there! Little Miss is not quite managing three balls consistently yet, but she’s getting there.

As always we made a little instructional video (back in May!) to show how it’s done…

We also made our own juggling balls, which are easy to do and great for kids when they’re just starting to learn as you can size them to fit small hands. The girls really enjoyed making a pile of these as they look very colourful and appealing! So here’s an instructional video for that too:

As Singapore cautiously eases the lockdown restrictions this month, we move forward with some anxiety into an uncertain future…but we will Keep Calm and Carry On Juggling!

  1. Very good girls. I am going to use your techniques and practice methods to really learn to juggle. After I become good, I will let you know. I am so proud of you. And guess what? Your video is the best instruction I’ve seen so far.
