How to Make Super Awesome Giant Bubbles

This November has been one wet day after another, which has put a bit of a damper on the start to the school holidays! However, windless rainy days are actually perfect bubbling days. So, getting back to one of our favourite activities, the girls made good use of a recent grey afternoon by getting out the bubbling gear to make some super giant bubbles. We found a deserted, sheltered amphitheatre to experiment in, and the ground was still wet when we ventured out, so for a while, the giant bubbles were even resting majestically on the floor as they landed. The cooler, damp air kept the bubble mix from evaporating too fast, and all in all their bubble-making was very successful!

Creating giant bubbles with tri-strings (long sticks with rope looped in a triangle formation) is really satisfying and mesmerising! The shifting forms and colours are wonderful. It takes a bit of practice, but both Chu girls have definitely got the hang of it now. Check out the video!

I found our retractable tri-string wands online; these are very portable and a perfect size for kids; some serious bubble-makers use long fishing rods to create massive tri-strings which would be too unwieldy for children to handle. The results are pretty amazing though! Maybe one day we’ll progress on to something like this…

We’ve had the giant bubbling gear for a while, but rarely have the opportunity to use it. I’ve discovered that tropical beaches make great bubbling locations, particularly if you can catch a calm morning or evening whilst the air is cool and humid. The sea air is so wet the bubbles last terrifically long. (Yes, I actually bring bubble-mix ingredients on holiday – don’t judge me.) Here are a few giant-bubble making photos from our past holidays.

  1. Those bubbles are amazing! I’d missed your earlier birthday party bubble blog so that looked good too, will have to have a go. Only problem might be finding somewhere in Edinburgh without wind!
